Scientists have long fixated on the heart's responses to the brain's directives, overlooking the profound dialogue that flows between the roots—the neurons—to the blossoming rose that is the heart. As our understanding deepens, we uncover a revelation: communication between the heart and brain is not a one-way street but a dynamic, reciprocal exchange, much like the interplay between the roots and the blooming rose.


The heart communicates with the brain and body in four ways:
  • Neurological (nervous system)

  • Biochemical (hormones)

  • Biophysical (pulse wave)

This intricate network, known as the heart-brain, or the intrinsic cardiac nervous system, is composed of complex ganglia, neurotransmitters, proteins, and support cells. For example, atrial natriuretic factor (ANF) / atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) plays a crucial role in maintaining fluid and electrolyte balance, regulating blood vessels, kidneys, and adrenal glands, and influencing various brain centers. Its effects include inhibiting stress hormone release, reducing sympathetic nervous system activity, and even impacting motivation and behavior.


Further exploration revealed that the heart synthesizes and releases neurotransmitters previously thought to originate solely from neurons in the brain. These include catecholamines like norepinephrine, epinephrine, and dopamine, which exert widespread effects on bodily functions.


Moreover, the heart, embodying the essence of a rose's beauty, also produces and secretes oxytocin, known as the "love" or "social bonding" hormone. Beyond its well-known roles in childbirth and lactation, oxytocin influences cognition, tolerance, trust, friendship, and the formation of enduring pair-bonds.
